Sutton now adds a new chapter to her distinguished recording career with SPRING, her 17th album as leader or co-leader and first voice-and-piano duo project. After decades of collaboration, Tierney Sutton and Tamir Hendelman share an intuitive, nearly telepathic connection. With SPRING, they distill that chemistry to its purest form—two artists, one piano, and an intimate conversation that reminds us that music can feel like renewal itself.

About Tierney Sutton
With 9 Grammy nominations to her credit, Tierney Sutton is widely regarded as one of the most distinctive and thoughtful voices in contemporary jazz. As vocalist, arranger, educator, and song writer, she has built a body of work marked by artistic integrity, collaborative innovation, and a profound commitment to storytelling. Raised in Milwaukee and currently based in Los Angeles and Paris, Sutton emerged in the 1990s with a fresh approach to jazz singing—one that blended impeccable musicianship, emotional depth, and a uniquely collaborative spirit. As leader of the acclaimed Tierney Sutton Band, she helped redefine the modern jazz vocal ensemble, creating recordings and performances that emphasized collective improvisation and sophisticated arrangements. Sutton’s celebrated tributes to artists such as Bill Evans, Frank Sinatra, Joni Mitchell, and Sting helped establish her as one of the premier interpreters of the Great American Songbook and beyond. The New York Times has called her “one of the most-lauded jazz vocalists of her generation.”
Described by Clint Eastwood as “My favorite singer”, Sutton and her band (notably pianist Christian Jacob) created the score for the legendary filmmaker’s 2016 blockbuster, Sully. In addition to performing it, Sutton co-wrote lyrics for the film’s end-title song, “Flying Home,” opening a new chapter in her artistic life as a lyricist and song-writer
Notable in this regard is the 2024 album Good People, recorded with the San Gabriel Seven. The title song and accompanying video represent perhaps the boldest artistic statement of her career. A satirical and historically informed examination of systemic racism in America, “Good People” confronts issues including housing discrimination, residential segregation, racial wealth inequality, and historical violence against Black communities.
Evolution as a lyricist reached a new level in Sutton’s 2025 collaboration with celebrated French jazz masters André Charlier and Benoît Sourisse. Talking to the Sun brought together Brazilian influences, French jazz elegance, and Sutton’s increasingly confident voice as a writer. The album marked the first time she devoted substantial attention to writing original lyrics, contributing texts that complemented the duo’s sophisticated compositions while revealing a deeply personal and imaginative literary sensibility.
Most recently, Sutton has enjoyed extraordinary success with Spring, a duo recording with acclaimed pianist Tamir Hendelman. Longtime collaborators and musical soulmates, Sutton and Hendelman bring a rare level of trust and communication to both recording studio and stage, allowing songs to unfold with remarkable freedom and emotional immediacy. Critics and audiences alike have responded enthusiastically, with many citing Sutton’s work with Hendelman among the finest work of her thirty-year career. As the pair continue to tour internationally, Spring stands as a testament to the power of mature artistry, deep listening, and shared musical imagination. In the words of The New York Times, Sutton remains “one of the most-lauded jazz vocalists of her generation,” and with Spring, she continues to demonstrate why.
9-time Grammy nominee, Tierney Sutton has received a “Best Jazz Vocal Album” Grammy nod for every project she has released in the last decade. Known for her impeccable voice and imaginative treatments of The Great American Songbook, Sutton is heralded for her abilities as both a jazz storyteller and her ability to use her voice as an instrument. Her 12 recordings as leader have addressed themes such as materialism ( “Desire”, 2009), the pursuit of happiness (“On The Other Side” 2007), as well as paying tribute to the music of Bill Evans (“Blue In Green” 2002), Frank Sinatra (“Dancing In The Dark” 2004), and pop icon Sting (“The Sting Variations 2016). Her 2013 Joni Mitchell tribute, “After Blue” featured keyboardist Larry Goldings, drummer Peter Erskine, jazz vocal legend Al Jarreau, and NEA Jazz Master flautist Hubert Laws.
Since 1993 Sutton has fronted “The Tierney Sutton Band” which features instrumental virtuosos Christian Jacob, Trey Henry, Kevin Axt and Ray Brinker. On stage the band exhibits an “almost unearthly” connection, a tribute to having the same world-class personnel for over 20 years—a virtually unheard-of accomplishment in today’s music business. Incorporated partners, all decisions, musical or business are made by the band as a unit. In 2011 they received a Grammy nomination for their collaborative arranging, the only band ever to receive this honor.
In May 2016 Tierney was approached by legendary Director Clint Eastwood. The original score to his box-office smash, “Sully”, was created by TSB pianist, Christian Jacob, The Tierney Sutton Band and Clint Eastwood. The end-title song “Flying Home” features music by Eastwood and lyrics by Tierney Sutton and JB Eckl. It is performed by Tierney Sutton and The Tierney Sutton Band.
When she is not performing, Tierney is in demand as both a studio vocal producer and vocal educator. In 2016 she worked with famed lyric soprano Natalie Dessay for Sony Classics’ “Pictures of America” and the soon to be released “Between Yesterday and Tomorrow”.
She taught for over a decade at USC’s Thornton School of Music and spent 6 years as the Vocal Department Head at The Los Angeles College of Music in Pasadena,CA. Tierney has taught and mentored some of the finest new generation of singers including Gretchen Parlato and Sara Gazarek.
